Swapping Bumpers

Here's a straight forward approach to changing your front end out, and matching the color to the original car.

Step 1: Find a car in desperate need of a face lift. This car has zipties holding the existing front end together. The perfect candidate.

Step 2: Find a donor car that is at the same camera angle as your original. This is important to keep your project as realistic as possible. This may take 5 or 6 tries before finding the right match. Don't give up. There's tons of resources to try and find the right donor for your car. I decided on this Supra for a custom look. Cut out the area you want to take from your donor vehicle with the Poly Lasso tool and Copy it.

Step3: Paste your new bumper onto your workspace. You may have to do some transforming to get it to sit just right. I had to do a bit of warping too.

Step 4: Find the areas you want to keep their original color. For instance, the grill, turn signals, other intakes, etc. Outline these with the Poly Lasso tool and Copy and Paste them as a new layer.

Step 5: Now for the color matching. The smart thing to do at this point is to Desaturate (Ctrl + Shft + U) your new bumper layer (layer1).Grab your Brush tool or the Eyedropper and select a color in the body of your original car. Use the Hue & Saturation (ctrl+U) function, and hit the Colorize box down in the corner, This will get you the right color, but now it's up to you to get the saturation right, and also the lightness & darkness to match. I had to drop the saturation down quite a bit for this one to get closer.

Step 6: Hit Ctrl + L to activate your Levels controls. Adjust accordingly, watching the contrast of your bumper in comparison to your overall car. You may have to use the Dodge and Burn tools to help get all the areas to match the way they need to. Be very carefull with the dodge and burn tools though since they can be destructive to your image if over used.

Step 7: Do any last minute tweaking to the bumper. You can also go back to your other layer you cut out for the grill and lights, and use the Sponge tool or bring the saturation down to get rid of any color that might have bled through from the original color of the bumper.

That's one more trick to add to your arsenal. You can apply these steps to any part you want to take from another car to add to your's.
